A Great App: YouVersion.

Do you have a hard time fitting in Bible reading, but always seem to find time to check Facebook and Instagram? Well, I could just tell you to put down your phone; instead, I'm going to tell you to pick up your phone and download the YouVersion Bible app.

This is not a commercial. I have no relationship with the makers of this app; I just love it. First, you can read the Bible. It's easy to search for whatever scripture you like. You can also do things like highlight scriptures, share them, and even make images from stock photos, or your own, featuring your favorite verses.  You can also set it up to do devotional plans. For example, there are plans from some of your favorite artists like TobyMac, Chris Tomlin, and Switchfoot. There are also topical devos such as the one on Thankfulness from Joyce Meyer that I'm doing right now. The great thing is that you can set it up so you get notifications on your phone to remind you to read them.

Another cool thing is that you can actually be "friends" with people through the app. It can be accessed through Facebook and it automatically lets you see which of your Facebook friends are using the app. You can then see what plans they are doing (if they have it set to public) as well as other activities they do. You can then like and comment on what they're doing, just like on other social media. It makes it really nice to be able to encourage one another to read the Word.

I honestly had this app for quite some time and barely used it. It was actually my daughter, Princess, that told me about how cool it was. I am really just getting into it, and I am not even sure of all that you can do with it. This is not meant to be a review, just a heads up on a cool app I've found that has made remembering to read my Bible every day easy. I figure if technology can make it easy to waste time, I might as well figure out a way to make it use my time more wisely. This is a fantastic way to do it. Hope you check it out!

The Pencil Grip, Inc

Thin Stix by KwikStix

About the product/service:
As part of the Homeschool Review Crew, I received a free pack of Thin Stix 6 Pack of Classic Colors from The Pencil Grip, Inc. so I could check them out and let you know what I think. These are cool little paint sticks. They look like markers but are actually tempera paint. You take off the cap, twist the bottom, and the paint is exposed. (Like old-fashioned lipstick.) Then just draw on your paper, poster board, cardboard or canvas.

What are the pros of this product?
  • Inexpensive
  • Easy to use
  • Quick Drying (90 seconds)
  • No water needed
  • Easy clean up
  • Comes in lots of colors (even metallic!)
  • Works on paper, posterboard, and more
  • The colors are very vibrant
What's not to like?
The only thing I can say I didn't like was the fact that the caps don't fit on the end of the pen when you are using them. That's probably because you have to twist the end to bring up the paint. It wouldn't keep me from buying the product, but I always lose my caps when they don't attach, and sometimes when they do. LOL

The Crazy Mom take:
I was excited to try these paint sticks because lately I've been dabbling in hand lettering and drawing. I thought I would use them to letter. I really didn't have a whole lot of success with that because they are paint, not ink. To be honest, I thought that they would have a finer point because they are called Thin Stix, but when I got them, I realized they were thicker. So, instead I tried to draw with them. They are really cool to use! (Maybe I'll keep working on using them to letter, too. I am just really new at it and it takes me a while to learn new techniques.)

For my first project, I decided to go with something simple. Just a few flowers. I can't really describe it, but I really liked how the Thin Stix felt to use. They are paint, so they felt smooth. Then they really did dry very quickly. The company says 90 seconds, but it seemed to be even faster than that. (Sorry, I didn't time it. LOL)

Anyway, I love they way the color went on so smoothly and dried still looking just as vibrant and shiny as when I first drew the flowers. My picture is very simple, but I feel like it looks so much better than it would have had I used markers, colored pencils, or crayons, or tried to use regular tempera paint with a brush. You don't see the lines the way you do with most other drawing products.

I'm sorry my photo isn't the best. They look much better in real life, but that gives you an idea as to what you can do with these paints.

What's the bottom line? $8.49 at Amazon.com

I am going to give Thin Stix 5 out of 5 smileys!!!

School's Out for Summer!

We officially ended our school year today! Of course, that doesn't mean we're actually done. LOL What it does mean is that I am done sitting down with them and doing our "together" school. We still have a few review items we're working on, and Bear still has some history and math to work on, but we no longer have set school hours and life is a whole lot freer. Oh, and of course we will still do Bible study. :)

I have a grad this year, so right now my main focus is on getting his graduation party planned and everything purchased. I really do not enjoy planning parties. LOL I am good at it, though, I have to admit. This is our thirteenth big party that we're throwing, and honestly, they are all just about the same. So, it's cool. I got his.

You might have noticed that I never did post anything about the cleaning project goals I made for myself. Well, I that's because I honestly never did them. I will get to them eventually. I think. We keep talking about moving. We have lived here 26 years and that scares me, but maybe it would be a good thing to clear some things out. Of course, we talk about moving all the time, but we never do. Who knows. :)

Anyway, hope everyone else's school year is going smoothly and that you're finishing things up, too. We have done really well this year and among other things, finished two math books, two science books, learned tons of new ASL signs and went through all of Genesis and most of Exodus. Who knew how easy homeschooling could be with just two children to teach. (Yes, technically three, but Dode was pretty much on his own.) I just hope next year is just as easy. Yeah, maybe I should get around to planning that. LOL

Here's to a great summer!

Only Passionate Curiosity Homeschool Rescue

About the product/service:
As part of the Homeschool Review Crew, I received a free subscription to Homeschool Rescue from Only Passionate Curiosity. (Trivia: This company is owned by Heather Aliano who is a former Homeschool Review Crew member!) The whole idea behind this 60-day online course is to encourage any homeschool mom who feels overwhelmed or inadequate. In others words, everyone at one point or another. Their slogan is: Breathe New Life Into Your Homeschool.

The course includes over 20 videos, plus worksheets, audio files, resources, free teacher and student planners, and, if you sign up for the VIP version of the course, you actually get three one-on-one coaching sessions with Heather herself!

This graphic illustrates the content of the course very well, so I won't reinvent the wheel:

What are the pros of this product?
Did you see the above graphic? I don't think there is anything here that is not covered. The 60-day course is very comprehensive. I like the way the video lessons are fairly short, and then there are printable sheets to do as "homework." There are also audio files and other resources. It's great because everyone has their own learning style and this course incorporates many ways to learn. There is even a facebook group, a planned "live group" experience, and free digital planners for both parents and students.

Also, Heather keeps it real. Really real. Oh my goodness, she is spot on. I mean, she actually reminds us to put our phones down during school. She seems to really have a grasp on all the struggles we homeschool moms have. :)

What's not to like?

Ooohhh, you might just feel a little convicted. ;)

The Crazy Mom take:
I think this course is fantastic. I know there are times in my life when I really could have benefitted from a course like this. Heather is like having a homeschool veteran as a best friend who will not only help and encourage you, but will call you out if you're getting off track.

I am just finishing up my 21st year of homeschooling. I think I have things pretty much down. I still felt like she pointed out some areas I could tweak. That cell phone thing. Ugh. I am so guilty. If my kids are working on a math problem, I'll just pick up my phone to take a peek. You know, they hate that! They are always on me to put it down. Even though they don't need me to watch them work step by step, they want to know I am fully engaged in their learning.

Another thing she talked about was saying "no." I have learned to do this, and I can't tell you how freeing that is! Even when you feel obligated to someone to do something, you really have to decide how it is going to affect you and your family. Yes, God wants us to do things that aren't easy sometimes. Yes, we are called to sacrifice, but we really need to be sure we are in God's will when we say yes.

Yet another issue I have struggled with that she addresses is finding time to do "hands-on" things. Wow, this one is me all the way. I am a book learner. I am always putting off things like experiments and art projects until "later." I have gotten a lot better since being on the crew forces me to do some things, but I'm still learning. :)

I didn't get through all the lessons like I'd have liked to. What I did get though, I thought was really good. She really does have a gift for teaching and obviously has gained a lot of wisdom. She's basically the Titus 2 woman I aspire to be. :)

What's the bottom line?
$97 for a lifetime membership/VIP membership $137

I am going to give Homeschool Rescue 5 out of 5 smileys!!! :) :) :) :) :)

My wallet full of woes
Wouldn't save a single soul, no
If it was a free world

I would be a rich girl

Institute for Excellence in Writing

Institute for Excellence in Writing High School Essay Intensive

About the product/service:
As part of the Homeschool Review Crew, I received a free High School Essay Intensive DVD course from Institute for Excellence in Writing, often know as IEW.

The title is pretty self-explanatory. It's a heavy-duty course in essay writing for high school students, especially college-bound students who will be taking the ACT, SAT, and/or writing personal essays as part of the college or scholarship application process. Basically it comes with five DVDs, a 25-page packet of written information and prompts, and what they call a "Portable Wall," which is a tri-fold resource that puts all the tips and trick for writing an essay, such as examples of different essay models, ideas for attention getters, and examples of transitional phrases, in an easy to use graphic.

Here is a breakdown of the different topics that this curriculum covers:
  • General Strategies for Essay Writing
  • Understanding and Preparing for the New ACT Essay
  • Understanding and Preparing for the Redesigned SAT Essay
  • Strategies for the "personal essay"
What are the pros of this product?
Honestly, it's just done well. It pretty much covers everything you could possibly need to write an essay well. I love that it comes with DVDs, but there are still 25 pages of information in writing form so that it works with more than one learning style. Also, the Portable Wall thing is really cool. I love these kinds of "cheat sheets" as I like to call them. No, it's not really cheating to use them, unless you sneak one into the ACT or SAT test. LOL

What's not to like?
I can't really see any negatives with this product other than the fact that if you are taking only one of the standardized tests, you don't really need the information for both. It might be nice if they sold an ACT focused version and an SAT focused version for a lower price. I realize that's not really a negative, but more of an opinion.

Oh, and the packet of handouts is just printer paper held together with a staple. You would probably need to come up with a way to keep them from getting messed up, so there might be an additional cost there if you chose to 3-hole-punch them and put them in a binder or something. It probably depends on your kids and how careful they are. Mine aren't too careful. ;)

The Crazy Mom take:
I was interested in this product because my son was taking the ACT in April. I am a writer, but ironically, writing has been my toughest subject to teach. None of my kids really have the writing bug. I mean, they write songs, poems, and long-winded statuses on social media, but I can't say any of them really enjoy writing a good old-fashioned high school essay.

Anyway, I had been telling my son, who'd spent a lot of time studying for every other part of the ACT, to please write some practice essays. He gave a half-hearted attempt a few times but really balked at the idea. He's a math and science geek, and has always had issues with spelling, grammar and such. Finally, I was able to have him use the ACT prep part of this course. I could guilt him into it by saying he had to for my review. LOL Well, he did and while he didn't get a fantastic essay score, it wasn't bad at all. Honestly, I was quite pleased and his ELA (English Language Arts) score was at college-ready level.

I'm so glad I had access to this because, apparently, they changed up the essay section a bit in 2016. I didn't know this and we'd been looking at older essays from previous years as examples. It was great that the video is up-to-date and includes the newer information. (I don't really know anything about the SAT, but it looks like they have also changed up their essay section, so it would be wise to use this resource if your child is taking the ACT or the SAT.)

What's the bottom line? $79

I am going to give High School Essay Intensive 5 out of 5 smileys!!! :) :) :) :) :) :)

Cleaning Goals: Successes and Fails

Remember that list of things I was going to clean? Yeah, I know, I keep bringing that up. I still haven't gotten to a single one of them. I have, however, made a huge dent in the laundry. I also did quite a bit of organizing in the basement. I don't really care if I'm keeping to the list, as long as something around here is getting cleaned.

School is almost over around here. Just the rest of this week and next week and I am done for the year. Well, we'll have some review things we'll be doing, but for the most part, I will be freed up to start cleaning and organizing. Okay, after I throw my son's grad party, that is. There is always something!

So, here's to progress. I hope I can really get some things done this summer!

The Secret Bridge {Lamplighter Publishing Reviews}

The Secret Bridge {Lamplighter Publishing Reviews}

About the book: As part of thHomeschool Review Crew, I received a free hardcover copy of the book The Secret Bridge by Amy Le Feuvre from Lamplighter Publishing. While this is a new review, this is a rather old book! As of this writing, the book is 118 years old!

This book is the story of a penniless young lady named Bridget who is forced to move to England after a tragic loss. (Trying not to spoil the story!) After arriving, more complications take place and she is faced with some very trying circumstances. One thing she must do is decide if she should marry a man named Godfrey. Her relationship with Godfrey parallels her relationship with God as the story progresses. There are a lot of secrets to discover as the story goes on, a lot of relations to repair, and maybe a few twists and turns that keep things interesting.

What are the pros of this book?

  • The goal of this publisher is to "develop Christlike character one story at a time." That is the goal of this book, so that's definitely a pro.
  • Also, wow, the book itself is just gorgeous! It's what they call leather-toned, and it's a nice aqua color with a gold colored plate on it. It is the kind of book you put on your bookshelf to not only read but look good.
  • The story, being written in 1899, is clean and there is no sexual content.
  • The story is interesting and gives a glimpse into life in England in the late 19th century.
  • There is a lot more substance to this book than there is in the modern day series that are written and churned out by modern authors and can be very predictable.
  • There are footnotes which give addition information, including Bible references!
  • While the book is not written in a letter format in its entirety, many letters are included as part of the story. This gives a nice personal look inside the characters. There is also a different font used for each character who writes a letter, so that also gives a little additional personality to the text.

What's not to like? About the only negative might be that some of the older vocabulary might be unfamiliar to today's reader.

The Crazy Mom take:
The book is recommended for ages 12 and up and since it revolves around a love story, will likely be most appealing to girls and women. I had my daughter Bear, who is 16, read the book. Here is her take:

I don't usually read love stories, but after reading the first chapter I was so interested in the book that I could hardly put it down. There were a lot of surprises, and I would definitely recommend it to my friends. I would say, though, that it would be better for kids in high school than younger kids.

What's the bottom line? $28 hardcover (272 pages)

I am going to give The Secret Bridge five hearts. 💗💗💗💗💗

ArtAchieve

About the product/service: As part of the Homeschool Review Crew, I received a subscription to the Entire Level 1 of the ArtAchieve website. This includes ten art lessons for kids 5+ or for the inexperienced artist who wants to start at the beginning. The lessons are based on images from around the world. Facts are given about the lesson's topic and links are provided along with each lesson so that you can dig deeper into the science, language, and social studies connections to the artwork.

Try a free lesson here

A free lesson on shading by Bear

What are the pros of this product?
  • It's reasonably priced.
  • It's well organized.
  • It includes warm-up exercises.
  • It uses basic art supplies you most likely already own.
  • It helps make connections between art and other subjects.
  • There are levels for all ages/stages of students.
  • You are given instruction, but can "make it your own."
  • You can choose to follow along with either a video or a Power Point.
  • Even the most inexperienced artist will be able to create beautiful artwork.
  • Meets the National Standards for Art Education: National Standard for Visual Art
The Owl from Bali

What's not to like? There really are no cons that I can think of. If you don't already have access to an art curriculum, have limited time, or are teaching a class, this should be a good fit for you. If you already have resources, this might not add much to your art studies, but if you don't need an art curriculum, you probably wouldn't be considering it anyway. LOL

The Hungarian Insects by Bear

The Crazy Mom take:

When I chose the Level 1, I probably made a mistake. It's for ages 5 and up, and we are definitely up. LOL My daughter is 16, and I'm a little older than that. ;) The reason I did this was because we love to draw, and we have done other programs, but we have never done anything where it starts from very simple to more advanced techniques. Level one is really for those who have basically no training. We probably should have chosen a higher level.

I have to say, that for my daughter, I don't think it would have been worth it to pay for the subscription. She is old enough to get out one of the several art books we have around here and just follow along. If she were interested in any of the social studies, language arts, or science topics related to the subject, she is plenty proficient at Googling and would have no problem finding additional information.

A higher level might have been a better fit were we paying customers, but for the reasons outlined above, I think she would be able to cobble a decent enough art curriculum with the resources we already have, supplemented with various free websites, YouTube, etc. Keep in mind, though, that I am speaking from the perspective of someone who is not actually in the market for an art curriculum. I would have loved something like this when my kids were younger. Art was, unfortunately, often skipped due to the fact that life was so hectic then. Had I been able to set them down in front of a laptop and have them follow along while I cooked dinner or folded laundry, that would have been very helpful!

With that in mind, I think this would be awesome for is the busy mom of younger kids with no real resources who doesn't have a lot of time to put together a curriculum or Google additional information. (I've had this homeschooling gig for over 20 years. I have more curricula than I could ever hope to use.) I also think it would be great for a co-op class. I could see maybe a class of first or second graders using this (Level 1) and learning not just about the art, but learning from the additional information the links provide. The teacher would have very little prep time and younger kids would love it because their drawings would (hopefully) look fantastic! The price is decent, and I would think it would really go over well. If I were planning a kids' art class, I would definitely strongly consider this.

What's the bottom line?
If you just want one lesson, it's just $4.00, but you can get the whole level for just $30, which is a 25% discount.
