Book Review: Living on HIs Income: Remembrances and Advice for the Christian Housewife

Back when I was doing a lot of reviews, I made friends with some of the other reviewers.  There were hundreds of us over the years, but only a few stood out to me, and though we've never met "in real life," we've remained friends to this day.  One of these ladies is a woman named Mrs.Sharon White. (She gladly wears the Mrs. title!) who writes a blog called The Legacy of Home.

What stood out about Mrs. White was how different she was (and is!) from most women today. She is an "old-fashioned" housewife, and loves it!!!  She loves to cook and clean for her family, and she does it without complaint. Now, I am an "old-fashioned" housewife, too, but I've much to learn in the cooking, cleaning, and no complaining department. Reading Mrs. White's books is like having that wonderful friend who actually models what I would like to be. One of her books is Living on His Income: Remembrances and Advice for The Christian Housewife.

Now, I understand that not all women today are full-time homemakers for various reasons. Living on His Income is not for those women. For some it may not apply, and for some it might even seem like a joke. I am not writing this review to start any "Mommy Wars." We all have our thoughts and opinions on that and are hopefully doing what we feel is best for our families. This book is for those few of us who still stay home full time (or want to) and must live on our husband's income.

Now, if you're looking details on how to cut coupons or make homemade laundry soap, this is not the book. (Though it include a list of resources.) This is a book you might want to have around for a lovely pick-me-up when money is tight, the kids are sick, or you're just having a bad day.  It is a collection of short articles that are meant to inspire you to continue to love and serve your family. Here is what it says on the back cover:

"Teaching on the Christian home is needed more now than ever for housewives. . . Here you will find brief examples of 5 housewives over 3 generations from Mrs. White's family. This includes her mother-in-law and grandmother. . . There are also 9 short chapters of advice and encouragement. These cover such topics as standard of living, the content wife, being dependent on him, and the house account. . . Practical resources are recommended at the end of the book. . . You will be inspired to continue on as a cheerful housewife, knowing your work is just as important as the mission field."

If you are a housewife, like me, I hope you will consider picking up this little book.  I'm sure you will find Mrs. White and her advice as lovely as I do!

Where to get it: Amazon.com

The pros: Written by one of the loveliest people on earth!  Very encouraging to those of us who are stay at home wives and mothers.

The cons: You will hate this book if you are a feminist!  :)  Also, it's more of a book to encourage us in our chosen role, than it is a "how to" book if that's what you are looking for.

The bottom line:  This paperback book it $6.99 plus S&H (Free if you have Prime or spend over $35 on Prime eligible purchases)

Rating*:  Home Run! (Yes, I understand not many women these days would even want to read a book like this, but for the demographic it's written for, it is wonderful!)

*Rating Scale

Home Run!  This product is totally awesome, and I'd recommend it to anyone!

Triple!  This product is great, and I think almost anyone would like it.

Double! This product is good, and it would probably work for some people, but not everyone.

Single!  This is an okay product that some people might like, but I wouldn't recommend it for most people.

Strike Out!  This is not a good product, and I could not, in good conscience, recommend it to anyone.

Happy reading!  :)

"Disclosure of Material Connection: Mrs. White is a friend.  She sent me a copy of this book, and I agreed to write a review about it on my blog.  Other than that, I received no money or other type of compensation for this review.  It might be a bit biased, I'll admit, because I just love her!!!
